Sustainability at Pegasus: Starting from Small Steps

At Pegasus, we’re conscious of the need to make our business more sustainable. That’s why we launched our new sustainability programme, Pegasus BetterWorld, earlier this year – so we can formulate a concrete plan for building a business that works for the future. Among other things, we’ll be seeking to obtain major social and environmental certificates that will help us show our clients we’re truly committed to making our business model more sustainable.

But change doesn’t always have to be a big thing: even seemingly minor actions can make a difference. Did you know that at Pegasus Group, we reuse 100% of the cardboard boxes that enter our warehouse in usable condition?

According to QCR, over 12.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard are used every year in the UK, and this number is projected to keep rising due to the increasing popularity of e-commerce. The UK’s recycling rate for packaging waste is 67%, meaning that up to a third of paper and card is not being recycled – indeed, around 7 million tonnes of cardboard end up in a landfill each year.

Much cardboard packaging nowadays is sourced more sustainably than it was in the past, with organisations such as the FSC providing certifications to help consumers be sure that paper products are being sourced from well-managed forests. Nevertheless, the most sustainable option is always making use of the resources you already have. That’s why, at Pegasus, we always make sure that none of the cardboard boxes we receive go to waste.

In addition to reusing resources, it’s important for e-commerce businesses to find new ways to make our resource use more efficient. That’s why we developed a new way of packaging our towels for delivery. Instead of using boxes, we compress them into bales, not only saving cardboard but also cutting down on emissions by reducing the number of shipments required.
